Dial the following number to connect with Tourism Police Division, obtain travel information and emergency help in an unexpected disaster. (All short dialling codes work only within Sri Lanka)

Sri Lanka Police

- Keep copies of passport and insurance in cloud storage (like Google Drive, Proton Drive etc.)
- Have emergency contacts saved offline
- Keep small amount of local cash for emergencies
- Know your accommodation’s address in local language
- Heavy rains can cause flash floods and landslides (May-Sept southwest, Oct-Jan northeast)
- Keep distance from wild elephants and monkeys. Call forest rangers if threatened
- If you feel an earthquake (very rare in Sri Lanka) at the coast, move inland immediately
What to Do in Emergencies
Section titled “What to Do in Emergencies”Stay calm and call for help. Assess the situation and decide whether you should call any authority based on the situation.
Note that, you can call 119 emergency number (from any mobile device, even without a SIM card) to contact police for an emergency situation.

Natural Disasters (Floods, Landslides)
Section titled “Natural Disasters (Floods, Landslides)”- Follow local weather alerts/warnings issued by Department of Meteorology, Disaster Management Center & local media.
- In case of a flood/tsunami warning, move to higher grounds immediately.
- If you are in danger, call
117/119emergency services. - If necessary, contact Sri Lanka Tourism Hotline -
1912and alert your embassy/consulate.
Theft or Crime
Section titled “Theft or Crime”- Call for help, let others know that you are in danger.
- Get to a safe, public place if needed and call police via
119. - Record details (time, place, descriptions) and file a police report.
- Contact your bank and block/cancel your stolen bank cards.
Lost in Remote Areas
Section titled “Lost in Remote Areas”- Check map/phone, note landmarks and last-known route.
- Try reaching emergency services by dialling the above numbers if needed.
- Seek help from locals, use Sinhala phrases from here, if needed to communicate with people.
